As Charlie starts participating more and more, he begins to get comfortable around the new people that Sam and Patrick introduce him to: Craig, Mary Elizabeth, Alice, and Bob; each one of them has their exceptional quirks that Charlie finds captivating. He soon feels like he has found his place in the world and enjoys hanging out with them and working with them in a production of The Rocky Horror Musical that Mary Elizabeth is in charge of producing.

Time goes by and he soon finds himself dating Mary Elizabeth because she invited him to the Sadie Hawkins Dance in which girls have to take the first step and ask guys to accompany them to said event. He goes on a few dates with her and realizes he does not feel the connection he expected when he agreed to hang out with her, which is mostly due to him being still hung up on Sam. One night, while Charlie and his friends are having a party, Charlie is dared to kiss the prettiest girl in the room; he had been feeling like his thing with Mary Elizabeth is not going anywhere and he really wants to break up with her, so, unexperienced as he is, he decides to kiss Sam instead of Mary Elizabeth, which is what everyone was expecting him to do. This causes a huge distress in the group’s dynamic, and Charlie finds himself spending his time alone just like at the beginning of his story.

Most of these events make us feel frustrated at Charlie because he is sometimes naive and ends up being taken advantage of. However, we got a clearer view of the reason behind Charlie’s behaviour: when he was a child, he was abused by his aunt Hellen, and none of the adults around him were aware of this fact.
